What is Phimosis of male Adult?
Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin (the skin covering the head of the penis) cannot be pulled back to expose the glans. It often looks like a tight ring oaround the tip of the penis, making full retraction difficult or impossible.
Why phimosis happen in Adult male
This form occurs due to scarring, infection, or inflammation. It can result from trying to forcibly retract the foreskin, which may lead to pain, bleeding, or emotional distress. If symptoms such as swelling of the foreskin during urination, difficulty urinating, or repeated infections occur, medical treatment may be needed.

When is Treatment for Adult Phimosis Needed?
In adults, phimosis that does not resolve on its own or leads to complications may require medical treatment. Possible issues include:
- Penile irritation or bleeding
- Ballooning of the foreskin during urination, causing difficult or forceful urination
- Urinary retention (inability to fully empty the bladder)
- Painful urination (dysuria)
- Painful erections
- Recurrent infections of the foreskin and glans (balanoposthitis)
- Paraphimosis (when the foreskin becomes stuck behind the head of the penis and cannot be returned to its normal position)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
If any of these symptoms occur, it is important to seek medical advice for proper evaluation and treatment.
How is Phimosis Treated?
Non-Surgical Treatment Options
These approaches focus on reducing inflammation and encouraging the foreskin to become more flexible:
- Topical Corticosteroids:
Applying a strong corticosteroid cream or ointment to the foreskin can help decrease inflammation and increase skin elasticity, making it easier to stretch. - Gentle Manual Stretching:
When used alongside steroid creams, gentle and consistent stretching of the foreskin can gradually widen the opening over time. - Enhanced Hygiene Practices:
Maintaining regular and thorough cleanliness is essential, particularly for individuals prone to infections.
Surgical Treatment Options
When non-surgical methods are ineffective, or in cases of severe or recurring phimosis, surgical intervention may be necessary:
- Circumcision:
The most definitive treatment, circumcision involves the complete removal of the foreskin. It permanently resolves phimosis and prevents recurrence. - Preputioplasty:
A less invasive alternative to circumcision, this procedure involves making small surgical incisions in the foreskin to widen it, preserving its structure and function. - Dorsal Slit Procedure:
Typically used in emergency situations—especially for relieving paraphimosis—this procedure involves making a single incision along the upper length of the foreskin to release constriction. It’s less commonly performed as a long-term solution.
